You may need to purchase a bicycle, depending on the area they are assigned. About 1/3 of our missionaries are on bikes. You do not need to purchase a bicycle prior to entering the mission field.
Wait to purchase a bike until you see if you need one. Use of a helmet and lock is mandatory. All bicycles must be fitted with working reflectors, headlights, and taillights at all times. Missionaries are responsible for the purchase and maintenance of bicycles. Plan on having the tools necessary to keep your bicycle in working order.
Please bring money to purchase a bicycle, helmet, lock, maintenance tools, etc. If you cannot afford a bicycle, we suggest that you check with your local stake and ward for resources to help in buying a bike after you arrive in the Washington D.C. South Mission.
One of the best sources we have found for bikes is CTR Bikes. They have missionary packages that include a bike, lights, lock, and helmet. They ship the bike to the mission office, where it is assembled and delivered to the missionary.
If they do not have bikes available, missionaries have been able to find good, affordable bikes here in the mission area at Dick's Sporting Goods and some of the local bike shops.
Some parents have purchased them at a bike shop near them and had them shipped. BikeFlights.com usually has the best prices for shipping, but some bike shops will ship for less than $100.
The bikes that work best for them have a hardtail and front suspension. Look at the CTR Bike website for a good visual.
If you have a bicycle shipped here, please use the mission office address:
